This week’s focus was on clean kata presentation and detail - sharpening performance by drilling the small things that make a big difference.

We applied exercises taken from kata squad training across all Heian kata, and by the end of the week the transformation was noticeable: kata looked sharper, more dynamic, and some even began to tell a story through their movements. Those preparing for the Nationals next weekend pushed especially hard in every session, while lower grades started to integrate grading elements into their training.

The higher grades concentrated on stance transitions. We began with the first dachi kata, working on the connection between upper and lower body to create transitions that were both smooth and powerful. From there, we introduced kihon from the syllabus, practicing with the same mindful awareness - feeling the position first and only checking visually if we needed to. This kind of mindful training is something we’re very passionate about, as it turns “shapes” into meaningful practice.

Ruby and Natalie made great use of the extra training time, focusing on kata revision. It was fantastic to see Ruby’s progress - everything is returning quickly, and she’ll be back on the tatami in no time, doing what she does best.

Congratulations to Jakub on getting his student of the month award, every single member in the club has received some support from Jakub at some point and this doesn’t go unnoticed!

It has been a very productive week with noticeable improvements made in each class. We highly recommend you make the most of all training opportunities available, with one being this Sunday - HDKI GB South Region Squad Training. Whether you’re a keen competitor, an instructor, or simply like to train and learn new things - this is an opportunity not to be missed.
